16 Sep Fall 2025 LWMS Rally Letter

Contact Women Corner
A quick hello! My name is Stephanie Otto. I serve as the CAMM Contact Women Coordinator. It was a privilege to recently travel to both Malawi and Zambia to get a first hand look at how your packages are retrieved and put to use at our CAMM clinics. As you can imagine, the process is a bit more time consuming compared to what we are used to in the US. For example, mail is never delivered directly to the clinics, rather, CAMM staff need to visit the Post Office to pick up packages and these visits might take place once every couple weeks. If you have questions about shipments to Africa, current needs, or other CAMM related questions please reach out. I would love to hear from you. If you would like to join the Contact Women network or know someone who does, please contact me.

Zambia
In Zambia, we have a clinic staffed by national staff located in Mwembezhi Village, which is about 60 miles west of Lusaka. Services in Zambia include preventative healthcare for children, antenatal care, and birthing as well as outpatient services for illnesses such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, parasitic infections and tuberculosis.
Thanks to our supporters, this facility received a much needed upgrade to the solar system that provides dependable energy for clinic operations. Zambia is regularly experiencing power outages and without a consistent source of power, medications can spoil due to lack of refrigeration, medical equipment does not function for blood analysis and patients and staff do not have proper lighting for healthcare services. A huge thank you to all who supported this project.
Malawi Clinic
In Malawi, CAMM operates a mobile clinic. A 13-seater Toyota land cruiser serves as the clinic ambulance and transports the medical staff and supplies to four different clinic sites ranging from a 30-90 minute ride from Lilongwe. The clinic focuses on preventive healthcare for mothers and children, but also tends to those that need medical attention. We also provide an infant wellness program, which includes immunizations and care for children in Malawi.
Due to the devaluation of the currency in Malawi, resources are an ongoing challenge to the services provided there. For example, fuel costs have gone up 30% which puts a strain on clinic resources. Many in Malawi cannot afford basic medications and nutritious foods due to supply chain issues and high costs. Below are some examples.
2024 vs. 2025
Amoxicillin (1,000 ct) $28.66 $34.29
Calamine lotion (100ml) $1.14 $2.40
Maize (50kg) $21.71 $40.00
How is CAMM funded?
Although part of WELS World Missions, CAMM is not funded by the synod but instead relies upon donations from individuals, churches, schools and other organizations to fund its operations. We also receive many gift parcels, often from women’s groups and LWMS chapters, containing pill bottles (which we use for liquid medications), baby hats, blankets and onesies which are given to newborns at our clinics.
How do patients hear about God?
A devotion is held at the start of each clinic day. The devotion is conducted by ether a Pastor or church elder and consists of hymns, bible passages, a short sermon, and prayers, similar to a devotion in the US. Because most of our clients come before the start of clinic, a devotion is heard by nearly all of our 70,000 patients each year.
THANK YOU!
On behalf of the entire CAMM stateside committee, we would like to say thank you to LWMS for all of your years of support and prayers.
