Lutheran Mobile Clinic

The month of April got off to an interesting start. As you heard in the previous letter, we walked into a flooded house after being away for a weekend. Torrential rains caused a roof leak, but thankfully nothing very valuable was lost and, after all, water can be cleaned up with mop, or several mops in this case. I am very thankful that it was during the last rain of rainy season that the roof decided to give up. Nothing fast ever happens in Malawi, and we are still waiting for the roof to be repaired.

March 2012

Greetings,

I hope this letter finds each of you doing well. We are nearing the end of “Rainy Season”. The maize is very tall. The pumpkins that are planted throughout the maize fields are ripe; tobacco is being harvested. The roadsides on the way to our clinic at Suzi are lined with both pink and orange flowers. The poinsettias in our yard are turning bright red. We’ve been enjoying eating avocado, sweet potatoes, guava, pineapple, pumpkins and roasted maize. The evening temperatures are turning cooler. It’s a beautiful time of year in Malawi.

February 2012

This month I was able to take a weeklong break from clinic work and travel to Victoria Falls on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border. I can’t begin to describe the sight and the thunderous sound of this magnificent waterfall.

Happy New Year – even though we are into February!

We celebrated New Year’s Eve at Missionary Peter Martin’s house. Most of the Lilongwe Lutheran Mission families took part in the fun. We started our evening with devotion led by Pastor Martin and we sang a hymn. We had an “appetizer potluck” for dinner and then played Trivial Pursuit. Pastor Martin set the clocks ahead so we “rang in the New Year” a couple of hours early (for the children’s sake).

December 2011

What was on your Christmas list this year? If Lutheran Mobile Clinic had made a Christmas List it would look like this:

  1. Diesel
  2. Enough food to keep our Nutrition Class running
  3. Anti-malarial medications

Yes, those were the items that I was worrying about and really hoping to receive this month. And our Christmas list was fulfilled! I think we have been writing about the fuel shortage in every End-of-the-Month Letter this year, and the fuel predictions for December were especially grim. Fortunately, we managed to keep both ambulances up and running with the help of our driver, who dealt with the crowds at the fuel stations every time there was a delivery, and from the generosity of the missionaries who emptied their fuel tanks into ours whenever they were making a trip to Zambia (the bordering country that is not having a fuel shortage).
