Africa Calling

Althea Sauer Scholarship Recipient

CAMM Althea Sauer Scholarship Recipient:

Althea Sauer was a registered nurse and the wife of Pastor Theodore Sauer who served as missionary to Zambia. Mrs. Sauer worked as a nurse at the Mwembezhi Lutheran Health Center in the early years of the Central Africa Medical Mission. Pastor and Mrs. Sauer saw the tremendous need for spiritual and medical care. A scholarship in Althea’s name was established after her death in 1990. The scholarship provides funding for the educational expenses of African members of our sister synod, the Lutheran Church of Central Africa, while studying in nursing school.

Grace Chaweza is currently receiving funding from the Althea Sauer Scholarship to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Management. She is attending school in Blantyre (southern Malawi). Grace is married, has young children, and is highly regarded by the Lutheran Mobile Clinic for her leadership abilities as a nurse. Grace and her husband are truly grateful for the financial assistance that is allowing her to improve her skills and education. Donations to the Scholarship Fund help prepare highly qualified Christians such as Grace to serve with the medical mission. Grace will return to work with the Lutheran Mobile Clinic when her schooling is complete in two years.

One of the phases in the original blueprint of the organization of the Central Africa Medical Mission is the preparation of national staff to assume responsibility of the operations. The final phase designates responsibility of the medical mission to the LCCA and national medical staff. Our Mwembezhi clinic in Zambia has been operating under the direction of Jackson Kalekwa since 2007. It is CAMM’s goal that someday the Lutheran Mobile Clinic will also be under the direction of the LCCA and a national staff. The Althea Sauer Scholarship helps support this goal.

Please keep Grace and her family in your prayers.

In Your name we pray:

  • For patience and wisdom during the extremely busy and stressful days of the malaria season
  • For strength and guidance to work with individuals stricken with AIDS and to convey God’s love for them
  • For the ability of our staffs to see the Lord’s goodness in sickness and pain
  • That all work at the medical clinics is seen as the work of the Lord and supports being a bridge to the Gospel
  • For safe travels as our staff maneuvers country roads to get to villages and clinic sites
  • For the adequate supply of medications and fuel
  • For faithful and dedicated national staff in Zambia under the direction of Jackson Kalekwa
  • For faithful and dedicated national staff in Malawi under the direction of Melissa Schuetze (Nurse-in-Charge) and Kari Belter (Clinic Administrator)
